A family in Newport, MI came close to losing their home after the dryer in the basement caught fire.  Luckily the family was home when the dryer caught fire and they were able to call 911 immediately before the whole house was in flames. While their home still had a lot of damage they feel blessed they still have home.

This is the aftermath of poor workmanship in a Senior apartment building in Monroe, MI.  After some plumbing pipes were mistakenly cut water poured down through the fifth floor ceiling and walls all the way down to the third floor of this apartment building causing water damage to multiple apartment units as well as the main hallways in two of the floors.

Restoring Contaminated Buildings (12:30pm-2:30pm)

The purpose of this lesson is to provide you with a better understanding of what comprises a large loss event and of safety issues connected to large loss damage.

This was a trash out on a forclosed home in New Boston, MI.  2500 square foot home with trash and debris filled to the brim from the attic to the basement as well as all over the 9 acres of property.  We filled over a dozen 12 yard dumpsters to remove all of the trash and debris to make this home market ready.

When the crew got a call about a possible mold job in an empty Newport home, they were quite surprised to find that at some point the sump pump had gone out and there was 4-5 inches of water sitting in the basement.  

Contrary to what this looks like, it is not spider web, but a phenomenon that happens during a fire called a soot web.  When synthetic and petroleum based products burn, the particles that remain in the air cling to each other and form these chains that become spider web - like formations.  Many people think that the soot from the fire is clinging to existing spider webs, but these actually are completely created from the contents of the fire, and are by no means, indicative of anyone's housekeeping habits. 

Regardless of the size of the loss, SERVPRO of Carleton/Maybee has the resources to handle the tiniest of water leaks, or 2 entire floors flooding due to a pipe breaking.  As in any water loss, time is of the essence to minimize the damage and try to save as much as possible.

This is all that remained of a microwave that caught fire in a Monroe, MI home.  The fire spread through the kitchen, and there was some  major smoke damage in other parts of the home as well, but thank goodness SERVPRO of Carleton/Maybee was there to make it "Like it never even happened."

When substantial rainstorms come, and the ground is so saturated that it cannot absorb anymore, ground water and river levels can rise enough to create severe flooding.

In this picture, you can see the handrail that runs along the stairway going down, and it just disappears into the water.  Due to massive amounts of rain over several days, the water level was 3-4 feet higher than normal. 

It is especially important at these times to check basements and crawlspace areas to ensure sump pumps are functioning properly, because when water levels are this high outside, it doesn't take much for the water to come in.

There are many different ways to test for moisture in a building, but one of the easiest and less invasive ways is with a moisture meter.  Even if there is no visible sign of moisture (as in the pictured example), the meter will read even the slightest amount of dampness.  Notice that the indicator arrow is in the red, which means it is reading significant moisture, even though there is no carpet discoloration to the eye.
